  5. The following document details the virus definitions update
  6. procedures for:
  7.  
  8. * Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95
  9. * Norton AntiVirus 3.0
  10. * Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  11. * Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and NT Tools
  12. * Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for NetWare
  13. * Installing Virus Definitions Files Manually

  17. TIP: Be aware that there are now two different versions of
  18. Intelligent Updater with different filenames!  Read the section
  19. below for more details.  If you are receiving this update on disk,
  20. the Intelligent Updater program file is located on disk one.  All
  21. other update files are located on disk two.

  25. Intelligent Updater
  26. =====================================================================
  27. As part of our continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer
  28. viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called Intelligent
  29. Updater to simplify virus definitions files updates. Intelligent
  30. Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and installs new
  31. virus definitions files automatically. All you have to do is run the
  32. program, then scan your disk with Norton AntiVirus. Later sections of
  33. this document give step-by-step instructions for each Norton
  34. AntiVirus version.
  35.  
  36. For Intelligent Updater versions designed for floppy distribution,
  37. the Intelligent Updater program file is located on your virus
  38. definitions update disk one. The program name, which changes from
  39. month to month, uses the following form:
  40.  
  41.       mmDSKyy.EXE, where mm is the month and yy is the year.
  42.  
  43. Versions of Intelligent Updater that are too large to fit on
  44. floppies are named with the form:
  45.  
  46.       mmNAVyy.EXE
  47.  
  48. For example, 08DSK97a.EXE is the name of the definitions update that
  49. is distributed on floppies.  Both 08DSK97a.EXE and 08NAV97a.EXE are
  50. available for download, to allow flexibility in updating many
  51. computers at one site.

  55. Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95
  56. =====================================================================
  57. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus 1.0 for Windows
  58. 95 (NAVW32.EXE) is dated before June 1, 1996, you must update it
  59. using the NAV 95.0b patch or upgrade to version 2.0. As viruses
  60. continue to be discovered with alarming regularity, the NAV virus
  61. definitions files have grown in size to counter the latest threats.
  62. Applying this patch will ensure that your installation will continue
  63. to accept the latest (and largest) virus definitions files. Using
  64. older versions of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 can cause false
  65. detections when the new virus definitions are installed. This latest
  66. patch also adds support for Microsoft Service Pack 2 (FAT 32/large
  67. volumes) and will be required to apply the August 1997 virus
  68. definitions set.
  69.  
  70. Users of Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows 95 do not require anti-
  71. virus engine updates at this time.
  72.  
  73. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus program, copy this file to a
  74. temporary directory and execute it to extract the necessary files.
  75. Then click Setup to begin the installation process.
  76. The NAV 95.0b patch contains the October 1996 virus definition set.
  77. You must apply the latest virus definitions set update (for example,
  78. 08NAV97a.EXE) after completing the program update.
  79. NAV950B.EXE is located where the monthly virus definitions files
  80. updates are normally found. It is available for download from the
  81. Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America
  82. Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call Customer Service at
  83. (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.

  85. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definitions files:
  86. ------------------------------------------------------------------

  88. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
  89.    Updater program (08NAV97a.EXE or 08DSK97a.EXE).
  90.    For example, your A: drive.
  91. 2. Double-click (launch) the file 08NAV97a.exe or 08DSK97a.exe.
  92. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  93. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Before you reboot your
  94.    computer, you must run a scan for viruses. Scanning your drive
  95.    activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.
  96. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  97.    definitions.

  101. Norton AntiVirus 3.0
  102. =====================================================================
  103. Important Notice: If your version is dated before June 1, 1996
  104. (NAV.EXE, NAVW.EXE), you should update it using this Engine Update
  105. (UPDATEME.EXE). As viruses continue to be discovered with alarming
  106. regularity, the NAV virus definition files have grown in size to
  107. counter the latest threats. Applying this patch will ensure that your
  108. installation will continue to accept the latest (and largest) virus
  109. definition files. Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus can cause
  110. false detections when the new virus definitions are installed.
  111. This patch is required to apply virus definition sets dated
  112. August 1997 or later.
  113. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program, download
  114. the file named UPDATEME.EXE. Place the file in an empty directory and
  115. execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step
  116. instructions are included in the READ.ME file.

  118. The NAV 3.10 patch contains the October 1996 virus definition set.
  119. You must apply the latest virus definition set update (for example,
  120. 08NAV97a.exe) after completing the program update.

  132. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from Windows:
  133. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  134. 1. Go to (select) the directory or drive where you have the
  135.    Intelligent Updater program (08NAV97a.exe or 08DSK97a.exe).
  136.    For example, your A: drive.
  137. 2. Double-click on the file 08NAV97a.exe or 08DSK97a.exe.
  138. 3. Follow the on screen instructions.
  139. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Before you reboot your
  140.    computer, you must run a scan for viruses. Scanning your drive
  141.    activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.
  142. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  143.    definitions as well.

  145. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from DOS:
  146. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  147. 1. Exit Windows entirely.
  148.    For example, from within Windows, select EXIT from the File menu.
  149. 2. Change to the directory or drive where you have the Intelligent
  150.    Updater program (08NAV97a.exe or 08DSK97a.exe).
  151.    For example, type A: at the C:\ prompt.
  152. 3. From the DOS prompt, type 08NAV97a.exe (or 08DSK97a.exe) and press
  153.    Enter.
  154. 4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  155. 5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Before you reboot your
  156.    computer, you must run a scan for viruses. Scanning your drive
  157.    activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.
  158. 6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  159.    definitions as well.

  163. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  164. =====================================================================
  165. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  166. (NAVNET.EXE) is dated before June 1, 1996, you must upgrade your
  167. software before updating the virus definitions files. Using an older
  168. version of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager with the new virus
  169. definitions may generate false alarms.

  171. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program (quick
  172. instructions):
  173.  
  174. Detailed, step-by-step instructions are included in the READ.ME file.
  175.  
  176. The NAV 3.10 patch contains the October 1996 virus definition set.
  177. You must apply the latest virus definition set update (for example,
  178. 08DSK97a.exe) after completing the program update.
  179.  
  180. 1. Download the file named UPDATEME.EXE to an empty directory.

  186. 2. Copy NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to your local NAV directory.
  187.    NAVNET.EXE or NAVNETW.EXE must be in the NAV directory or path or
  188.    only the standalone files will be extracted
  189. 3. Execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents.
  190.  
  191. After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, you must do the
  192. following:
  193.  
  194.  1. Delete all VIRSP*.DAT files from the Norton AntiVirus Network
  195.  Manager directory.
  196.  
  197.  2. Recreate your .NNS files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template.
  198.  For information on how to recreate .NNS files, order FaxBack #4290

  201.  3. Update your virus definition set (detailed instructions below).
  202.  The NAV 3.10 patch contains the October 1996 virus definition set.
  203.  You must apply the latest virus definition set update (for
  204.  example, 08NAV97a.exe) after completing the program update.

  207. To update Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions files:
  208. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  209. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  210.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program
  211.    (08NAV97a.exe or 08DSK97a.exe).
  212. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  213.    AntiVirus Network Manager is installed.
  214. 3. You must have READ and WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  215. 4. Type 08NAV97a.exe (or 08DSK97a.exe) [path] at the DOS prompt and
  216.    press Enter.
  217. 5. Follow the instructions on screen.
  218. 6. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  219.    directory and scan a drive to activate the new virus definitions.
  220.    You must run a scan for viruses. Scanning a drive activates the
  221.    new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.

  225. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and NT Tools
  226. =====================================================================
  227. Users of Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and Norton NT Tools do
  228. not require anti-virus engine updates at this time.
  229. To update Norton AntiVirus for NT virus definitions files from
  230. Windows NT 3.5x:
  231. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  232. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
  233.    Updater program (08NAV97a.exe or 08DSK97a.exe).
  234.    For example, your A: drive.
  235. 2. Double-click on the file 08NAV97a.exe or 08DSK97a.exe.
  236. 3. Follow the on screen instructions.
  237. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. You must run a scan
  238.    for viruses. Scanning your drive activates the new virus
  239.    definitions and rebuilds critical files.
  240.  
  241. To update Norton AntiVirus for NT virus definitions files from
  242. Windows NT 4.0:
  243. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  244. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
  245.    Updater program (08NAV97a.exe or 08DSK97a.exe).
  246.    For example, your A: drive.
  247. 2. Double-click (launch) the file 08NAV97a.exe or 08DSK97a.exe.
  248. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  249. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. You must run a scan
  250.    for viruses. Scanning your drive activates the new virus
  251.    definitions and rebuilds critical files.

  255. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for NetWare
  256. =====================================================================
  257. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare,
  258. version 2.0 is dated earlier than December 13, 1995, you must upgrade
  259. your software before updating the virus definitions files. The new
  260. version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare detects and removes a new
  261. class of viruses called macro viruses. These viruses infect Microsoft
  262. Word document and template files, and Microsoft Excel files.
  263. For information on how to receive the upgrade, call Customer Service
  264. at (800) 441-7234.
  265.  
  266. To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definitions files:
  267. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  268. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  269.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program
  270.    (08NAV97a.exe or 08DSK97a.exe).
  271. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  272.    AntiVirus for NetWare is installed.
  273. 3. You must have WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  274. 4. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.
  275.      Choose DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus
  276.      for NetWare Windows configuration window.
  277.        or
  278.      Press F3 at the NAVNLM server console screen.
  279. 5. From a DOS prompt, type 08NAV97a.exe (or 08DSK97a.exe) [path] and
  280.    press Enter.
  281. 6. [path] is the location mapped in step 2. Follow the instructions
  282.    on screen.
  283. 7. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.
  284.      Choose ENABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus
  285.      for NetWare Windows configuration window.
  286.        or
  287.      Press F2 at the NAVNLM server console screen.

  291. Installing Virus Definitions Files Manually
  292. =====================================================================
  293. If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus
  294. definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to
  295. extract the virus definitions files, then copy the appropriate files
  296. to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  297.  
  298. To install virus definitions files manually:
  299. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  300. 1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (08NAV97a.exe or 08DSK97a.exe)
  301.    to an empty, temporary folder.
  302. 2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command:
  303.  
  304.       08NAV97a.exe /DUMP
  305.            or
  306.       08DSK97a.exe /DUMP
  307.  
  308.    Virus definitions files for all supported platforms are extracted
  309.    into the temporary folder.
  310. 3. Copy the appropriate files to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  311. 4. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information
  312.    on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
